MUSEUM QUALITY CHINESE NEOLITHIC JADE AXE HEAD / PENDANT

DESCRIPTION:
This medium sized ancient Chinese axe head is made of high quality translucent light green with lots of red, known as “Blood Nephrite”, Jade.
It is worked and polished and well patinated on all surfaces.
It is a somewhat flattened ovoid shape in cross-section.
The overall form most typifies a variation of the ‘Yue’ Axe developed and utilized during the late Neolithic era.
The hole was initially pecked and then drilled biconically from both sides.  There is also a lunate shaped ‘starter hole’ on one side as if the maker began drilling then decided to peck the start, likely because the stone was so hard.  Based on its beauty, the small hole, and since the blade end is smooth without evidence of having ever been sharpened, it is possible that the stone was originally designed for useage as a pendant.

Jackson’s On Main History:
Our business was established in 1966 by Claude and William Jackson, father and son, in Hollywood, California. Claude Jackson (now deceased) was a well known West Coast artist who executed numerous fine works many depicting the great movie stars of early Hollywood. Several of his works have been published and those originals now reside in the collections of various noted individuals and institutions. Most notable probably is his depiction of Marilyn Monroe in his ‘Red Kimono’, 1975, published as the centerfold in Roger Taylor’s anthology
